I prefer to represent the human experience of ordinary people with all our myth and frailties. Life exposed to its simple moments is where I find inspiration. My depictions of human interaction are not grand, but gritty, however they do have a raw truth and maintain dignity. I choose the human figure to express myself as I feel it is a direct and present style to communicate humanism, which is the content of most of my work.
When creating a new sculpture I choose a subject that I have experience with, although I do not aim to make work about myself, but rather explore a theme that is relevant to most people. As I develop my idea, I seek to broaden my understanding of the subject I wish to represent. Gathering information and perspective through observation, research and interviews with experts in the field provide me with the foundation to create with a focused awareness. When physically building the sculpture I prefer to be immersed in my subject matter by working on location. For example, when my subject was inner conflict, represented by identical boxers in fight, I built the sculpture in a boxing gym. This process of working in the subject’s environment leaves me open and accessible, which brings freshness and authenticity to my work.
The intention of my work is to invite the viewer to be present and accept the moment with trust, whether fabulous or futile, it is prefect just as it is. |
